Google Releases GOOG411 – Now Guys Can Ask For Directions By Voice Command!

Are you looking for information?

My wife likes to poke fun at me because I am very strangely cheap. I won’t think twice about dropping $3,000.00 on a top of the line computer system because, to me, that is a good investment. But I will just get really stubborn about parting with $0.75 to dial 411 to find a phone number. It just burns me up.

Well, fellow cheap-skates – I have some really great news for you from the good people over at Google.com. You know, the “Don’t Be Evil” guys. I don’t know about you, but I think most of the phone service providers out there specialize in being evil as they nickel and dime us to death with monthly fees and service charges. So, “Thank-you, Google!” They have just rolled out a very cool service, and like so many Google Apps, it is F*R*E*E! Now that’s a price I can live with.

So, now, let’s say you are driving downtown to go to a really cool restaurant. Suddenly, you find yourself caught in that unexpected traffic jam and it’s looking like you are going to be late. This is the hot new restaurant, it took you two months to get the reservation, and you just know they are not going to hold that table for more than a few minutes. You could dial 411. Oh, but that stupid little fee is making your blood come to a boil – or is that the guy that just cut you off and almost took your front bumper off?

Well, now you have a gift from your friends at Google. I highly recommend that you put the following telephone number into the speed dial of your cell phone. No… go ahead, grab your phone first… I’ll wait….

Okay, great. Here it is: 1-800-GOOG-411 or 1-800-466-4411. And here is their little roll out video.

Now, here is where it gets even better. Remember, you’re driving, you’re stuck in traffic, and you have no way to write anything down. Fear not, my friend. This service uses a voice recognition system. You speak the location and the name of the business and GOOG-411 returns a list of choices. You verbally choose from the the list, and the system connects your call for you.

Crisis averted. Your table is safe. Now where is the Google App that will allow me to use a voice command to disable the engine of that jerk who just cut me off! There must be a way to hack into that OnStar system.
