When People Know, Like, and Trust You, They Will Do Business With You

The web is like a rootin’, tootin’, Wild West town. Anybody can hang up a shingle and say they’re the foremost authority on anything they choose. Who’s going to stop them?

Maybe that’s one reason most folks are a little leery when taking someone’s word for something on the Internet. How can they know the website’s author is telling the truth? Well, fact is, they can’t unless the person is well-known. And even then, it’s hard to tell sometimes. Bernie Madoff, anyone?

So, the question is: are you a credible source of information on the Internet?

If you answered “I don’t know,” chances are you aren’t.

Don’t despair. There are some steps you can take to assure your web credibility will be a thing of enduring grandeur.

Be Honest

Above all, be honest. Tell people who you really are and why you’re an authority on a given subject. Don’t worry that you don’t have a degree in your chosen field. Richard Branson doesn’t have a college degree and look what he’s accomplished with Virgin Airlines and all the other Virgin companies.

Maybe your years as a telephone installer has made you something of an expert in public relations. So don’t be afraid to let people know why you think you’re an authority. Give them examples of how you handled difficult customers, of how you saved your company’s credibility by thinking on your feet. Show the public your stuff and pretty soon they’ll agree that you’re a whiz at making people happy.

Use Profiles

Fill out profiles at all of the social networking sites you belong to. The most important thing to remember is to be consistent. If you don’t remember what year you started that job with the publishing company, don’t guess. Get the exact dates and use them consistently. Make sure the information you’re putting out is correct.

Also, use a current picture. Sure, that high school photo makes you feel young again, but it’s not you today. Show people what you look like today so folks can put a face with your name.

And then don't keep changing it. WE become bored with our own material MUCH faster than our clients and prospects. Make sure that your photograph is recognizable all the time so people will instantly know it is you.

Be Consistent

Post regularly on several different sites; a blog, forum, and Twitter, for example. Be a regular fixture on these sites and people will associate your name with authority. And the more they see you, the more they believe what you write, the larger an authority you will be recognized as.

Be Reasonable

Selling yourself FIRST will lead to more business because YOU are often the product or service

YOU are often your primary product or service.

YOU are what your clients or customers buy.

YOU are the first-line of contact and how your prospects see the business you run.

Everything you do or say, how you dress and carry yourself, how you speak and write (even in short emails that you feel "don't matter"), and whether you are an "on-time person" or one who is always late combine to be the "brand" that is YOU.

And it ALL matters. A lot!

It is how your clients, customers, or patients think about you. It's how they refer to you when speaking to other people about you. It determines if they return to do business with you another time.

Did you ever hear the story about the blind men and the elephant?

  • The first man touched the elephant's trunk and described it as a flexible, long creature.
  • The second man touched the elephant's tusk and thought it was a very hard, smooth, upward-pointed animal.
  • The third touched the elephant's hoof and thought it was a large, flat, very heavy creature with several smoothe places (the toe nails).
  • And the fourth touched the tail and thought it was a short, pliable snake-like animal with hair at the end.

Each one "knew" the elephant for what his experience told him… and each was correct, but only PARTIALLY correct.

The same is true for YOU…

When Preparing For A Consulting Meeting With An International Foundation, The Following Questions Were Asked

The following questions are modified for this post. But they are very similar to what I asked my consulting client. See how they can help YOU as well.

Each of us needs to look at our business with fresh eyes (I guess that's why consultants like me get paid and why so many of us use Mastermind Groups to challenge our thinking and assumptions).

See how many of these can help YOUR business:

1. If someone is looking for you, what are they looking for? (Dig deep on this… if for photography, for instance, are they looking for pretty pictures OR are they looking to preserve memories? Are my success-marketing clients looking for more leads OR are they looking to serve a specific market while producing 20% higher profits? See what I mean?)

2. How do you spread the word about what you do? What methods do you use to get the word out? Are you limiting yourself to ONE way of getting new business? Many of us feel that ONE is the worst number in business (one person inside your business knowing how to update your website, for example. Or one printer or one mail house – when they get busy or go out of business, THEN what do you do?)

3. How do you find “new” people? What do these “new” people primarily want from you? Are you attracting people to you OR are you hunting them down and trapping them like in the old wild wild west? You need information working for you 24/7 and if you don't have it, let's chat about how you can GET it.

4. What words do you use to describe what you do or what you are looking for? Are you narrowly focused with your "keywords" or are you attracting people who use "long-tail search terms"? Examples: Marketing Consultant is a HUGE term with lots of results. But if you provide services to Read more on Marketing Success: Questions To Help You Profit With Your Business…

Time For You To Get Out Of The Jungle And Reach Your Summit

These are uncertain times, and it can cause even the bravest soul to think twice before launching a new business.

    • Will I be able to pay the mortgage?
    • Can I put food on the table?
    • Will my kids have clothes and shoes?
    • Can I do this on my own?
    • Is there any way to know I will succeed before I begin?

I can hear you now: "I want some assurances!"

Unfortunately, there is no easy blueprint for success, no surefire way to tell if a person can make it in the land of the self-employed. However, most successful professionals have a few traits in common, a few habits and ways of thinking that push them toward success.

Here As Some Traits I Think Are Most Important

They believe in themselves. The most important trait successful Professionals have in common is an unswerving faith in themselves and their ability to get the job done.

They know they are capable of completing any task, no matter how daunting. Even if they don't know exactly how it will get done, they know they can figure it out and make it work. Even just this attitude sets them apart from 99% of the rest of the world.

Successful Professionals know they can go head-to-head with anyone and come out on top. They thrive on competition and improving themselves through battle in the business arena.

They don’t shy from competition, they see it as part of the fun they have in this game.

“It's kind of fun to do the impossible.” Walt Disney

They visualize success. Successful Professionals keep what they want to manifest forefront in their thoughts.

Successful Professionals SEE the business they want to create and keep a picture of it in their heads all the time. And visualization isn’t all they do: they write down their goals and strategies to be sure they stay focused.

    • They see themselves succeeding in the profession they chose back in school
    • They see gaining more knowledge to be the best in their field
    • They see the service they provide helping their clients succeed.
    • They know that they must gain more knowledge about how to run a business and mastermind with others.
    • They see themselves shaking hands with business partners, closing deals, and the deal working out smoothly to the benefit of all parties involved.

Professionals have an unswerving belief in themselves and their ability to get the job done. They may not know exactly how they will accomplish a given task, but they know they can figure it out because they see the success they will achieve even before they start.

They don't think about what could go wrong.

They never, never, never worry about what could happen.

Believe me, if you're worrying about all the things that can go wrong, you're not keeping the success-vision of your business at the forefront of your thoughts. You're not visualizing success. In fact, you're visualizing the bad stuff that can happen and all your energy is going into creating it!

And since what you think about most EXPANDS, be sure to think of all the success and goals you have to achieve and let them be utmost in your thinking.

Here’s something I learned from a good friend who happens to love to ride his motorcycle when the weather is good.

Are You Stuck On A Plateau, Looking To Get Off?

Success in business isn't a magic spell you can learn at Hogwarts nor a secret that's passed down among the world's elite.

Success is a recipe that has a few proven ingredients. When you mix those ingredients with love, thought, and care, you'll create something that will nourish you and your family for years to come.

Here Are Some Of The Ingredients I Find Important In The Recipe For Success

1. Happy Customers, Clients, Patients. Yep, that's the number one ingredient that successful businesspeople have in their entrepreneurial cupboard. (And it doesn't matter if you're a Doctor, Dentist, Chiropractor, Photographer, Attorney, or any other professional or business person: this article applies to you because the people who pay you for your service are still people no matter what your profession.)

No matter what service you provide, it's all about the Client, Customer, or Patient. If that person isn't happy, she might not be back to see you!

Whatever you do in your business or practice, you should always think about the end user. Each and every action you take should be geared toward providing the best relationship/service possible.

Imagine yourself as your client and visualize how you'd like to be treated. Use that as a beginning to establish your service guidelines.

One other thing to consider: if you don't know who you're selling to, you can't market properly. And if you can't market to the right audience, the folks you do reach probably won't have much interest in your product or service. Know who you're selling to so you can reach the places where they hang out.

2. Results. People expect things quickly these days.

Our attention span isn't what it used to be (darn all those TV commercials with 27 edits for each 30 second commercial!), so when customers come to you with questions, you've got to be Johnny-on-the-Spot with answers.

When they call to see you, you'd better be prepared to help them or they can easily go elsehwhere.

If you always have answers and products/services for customers/clients/patients, you'll become the go-to-person, something money just can't buy.

3. Follow up. Part of keeping your customers happy is following up on an order, especially if there's some sort of snafu.

(Let’s face it – no matter how hard you try, no matter how conscientious you are, SOMETHING will go wrong at times.)

As a customer, it makes me smile when I get a call or email asking if I've everything went well during our appointment. This will only take a couple of minutes on your part, but will do wonders for your reputation.

Now, when your business really gets cooking and you've got dozens or hundreds of orders to follow up on every day, you might need to consider getting some help. But isn't that a great “problem” to have?

(And for those of us working online, auto-responders help immensely!)

4. Reputation. Your reputation is something that will grow when the first three ingredients are blended successfully.

This might take a little time, but it’s well worth the effort. A good reputation is crucial to any successful business endeavor.

(Hey, if anyone has ever talked to you about “branding” then THIS is branding – earn a stellar reputation and keep it!)

Time For You To Get Out Of The Jungle And Reach Your Summit

Remember your parents saying, “If you work hard enough, you can have anything in this life.”

You were graduated from high school, then college, earned your professional degree, and pursued that six-figure salary. “Work hard, play hard” became your mantra.

Nothing ever got in your way as you pursued the American Dream.

Until now.

And with the World-wide Economic Meltdown of 2008 – 2010, it's gotten pretty tight around your place.

Those pink slips in your friends' paychecks were like an electric shock to your heart. People down the street. Those you see in church. One of your grown children.

And fewer people are now on the golf course and tennis courts as they've stopped paying the fees to belong.

Sure, you knew the economy was lousy. You knew thousands of other people were losing their jobs.

But it wasn’t supposed to happen to you or people you care about.

What do they say: It's a recession when someone else is out of a job; it's a depression when YOU are out of a job.

And you know exactly what they mean as you see the scared look deep in the eyes of your friends.

Your life was all planned out! Get an education, get a great job, marry a terrific spouse, and raise a terrific family. Take memorable vacations to exotic locations. Send your kids to top colleges, and enjoy all the sentimental, inspiring moments of your childrens’ budding lives while simultaneously saving for your retirement, where you and your spouse would slow dance off into the sunset of old age, reflecting on the deep meaning of your lives together.

SPLAT@*#+! Dream over! Vanished. Where did it go and what went wrong?

Opportunities Abound For Professionals, Even In THIS Economy!

How often do we have to hear it from or read it in the news? The economy is the worst since our parents (and for some of us it's our parents' parents) were young. It's really awful.

All indicators are down. My personal retirement fund has shrunk by about 50%. Unemployment is rising (about 10% in the USA), and if it hasn't touched your family, you KNOW a family it has struck.

What do they say: it's a Recession when your neighbor loses his job: it's a DEPRESSION with YOU lose your job! It sure feels that way! (Seems to me the only time you feel worse is when everyone tells you that the economy is GREAT but you just lost your job – that happened to me once and that feeling is burned into my brain and heart, still searing my insides.)

And the effect ripples through our town, county, state, country, and world. You can't escape that we're part of a SYSTEM, not a series of individuals. Someone losing a job in Maine doesn't buy as many groceries so the farmer in Texas doesn't plant as man crops and the family in California has to pay more. And on and on and on.

And Bernie Madoff can only account for about $67 Billion of this, so there are many other factors at work.

And when I was a kid, I remember my Dad talking about the economy (he later ran a major real estate firm and was on the Board of the Philadelphia Fed… so he had learned a thing or two).

And if there was one major lesson I learned from him it's that OPPORTUNITY is just as great in any part of the cycle (for indeed, economies are cyclical).

So… that means that there are opportunities abounding right now.

And if you follow Internet Marketing (especially Information Product Marketing), perhaps you recently witnessed Frank Kern (one of the really good guys) sell more than 4,000,000 worth of CDs and booklets, teaching people how to succeed in today's economy. And this was in about 26 hours.

But For Many, Where Did The Dream Go?

But for people watching their 401(k)s being drained or their IRAs tumble, it certainly must feel like the sky has fallen. And if you're sitting at home instead of going into that job in an office, store, warehouse, or factory, the pain can be intense.

Or Perhaps You've Been Saying, Take Me From The Rat Race
